A flagship for Al Watikon, Libya’s Apple Authorized Reseller, in Ras Hassan, Tripoli. Every sales tactic the company developed was copied within weeks; its logo was the one asset no competitor could take, so the logo became the building.

The client
Al Watikon grew from selling gift cards into one of Libya’s leading mobile retailers. It came to Salmon with an existential problem: real commercial success, but no identity. It had a logo and nothing else.
The big idea
When a company’s only owned asset is its identity, the architecture becomes that identity, impossible to copy without copying the company itself. The Watikon mark is subtracted from the mass of the tower and becomes the main opening in the facade: from the first step, you are inside the brand.
Designing for people
Staff needed to walk into a building that declared: we are a corporation, not a shop. Customers needed to understand immediately that this was unlike any other phone store in Libya. Corridors never narrow below 1.25 m, and every service counter keeps a clear metre in front of it.
Light and material
White concrete outside, oak veneer inside. After dark, programmable lighting runs through the facade perforations and the building becomes a moving identity on the street. Inside, corridor light and display light are kept strictly separate, so light itself marks the step from browsing to buying.
What was left out
Decorative complexity, and signage as the primary identity. The identity is structural, not applied.
The outcome
The opening night drew a crowd large enough to fill the street. Al Watikon became a landmark in Tripoli’s mobile retail market, with an identity that cannot be copied.
The principle
When a client’s only differentiator is being copied, make the architecture the differentiator.
Process
The site sits on a busy commercial street in Ras Hassan, in a row of ordinary shopfronts. The building had to stand apart from its neighbours without turning its back on the street.
A study of the sun’s path across the site decided where the facade opens and where it stays solid, shielding the glass from the harsh western sun.
The programme is stacked vertically across the floors on a compact 189 m² footprint, from retail at street level to offices above.
The mass is given soft, rounded edges like a phone, so the building expresses what it sells before any sign is read.
The Watikon logo is carved through the full height of the tower and becomes the main opening of the facade: the entrance is the brand.
A perforated concrete screen wraps the glass. It shades the interior, draws air into the building, and holds the smart LED boxes that animate the facade at night.
